The Blackstone

Potter Palmer was a dry goods merchant who moved to Chicago in 1852; envisioned State Street as the new commercial center supplanting Lake Street. Designed by Solon S. Bemen in 1886, with top three floors added in 1898, as a showroom and factory for the Studebaker Carriage Company. Bemen also designed the town of Pullman, now part of Chicago’s South side, a model company town. Ride the manually operated lifts to the top floor and walk down. Prepare to be amazed.
