Situated along the eastern slope of the Black Hills mountain range, Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota. Known as “Gateway to the Black Hills” and the “City of Presidents”, Rapid City was incorporated in 1883. Just outside the city lies Mount Rushmore, sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum. The sculpture features sixty foot sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
